Relaxing weekend in a pleasant environment

We spent an extended weekend (3 nights) here at the end of May 2026 and felt very comfortable. The location is excellent, meaning it is quiet and the center with the train station is quickly reachable on foot.
Breakfast and dinner were excellent.
We did not use the wellness offerings as we went on excursions, small hikes, and walks during the day.
There were also plenty of parking spaces available.

Horror experience and service beyond hell.

I have never had such a horror experience before. The service and treatment of hotel guests would be absolutely inexcusable even in a normal guesthouse – but in a 4-star hotel? The sheer audacity!
A good friend of mine booked several rooms, as well as the vacation apartment, at Thomahof for the weekend of June 19 to June 21, 2026.
We were a group of a total of 6 people (5, after one cancellation). I had taken one of the bedrooms in the vacation apartment. Around 10 PM, we ended the evening and each retreated to our rooms.
I couldn't really sleep well, so around 4:00 AM, I read a little, when suddenly I felt a thick, 8 mm bug crawling on my left arm. It was a bedbug!!!
I immediately jumped up and inspected the bed further. After a few moments, my worst fears came true! The entire bed was completely infested with bedbugs! I found more and more of them; only a few were as large as the first one. Most of them were just the size of a pinhead and only visible because the bed sheet was white, allowing me to see the small black dots moving across the mattress.
To the side of the bed was a couch where I had placed my worn clothes, as well as my suitcase and my toiletry bag. I immediately checked everything, and indeed – there were also 2 bugs on my capri pants!
I left the room immediately with my belongings. But anyone who has ever read anything about bedbugs knows that this now posed a real problem. Because these creatures spread precisely by nesting in luggage, in cracks and folds, and then infesting other new beds. Once caught, it is nearly impossible to get rid of a bedbug infestation.
I then immediately took a shower, put on fresh clothes, and left my worn clothes in the apartment. It was now around 4:20 AM. It was slowly getting light outside.
With my suitcase, I then walked over to the reception, which is not staffed at night. So at night, there is absolutely no one from the hotel staff present. There was an 'emergency bell' that one could ring to alert the hotel manager. She lives in an apartment building directly across from the hotel.
I had explained to her over the intercom that there was a bedbug infestation in my bedroom and that I would like another room. Her reaction over the intercom? - '... and at this hour!.... well, okay, I’ll just get dressed....' This was accompanied by an annoyed sigh over the intercom!
After a few moments, the lady came running over. No 'Good morning', no 'Hello', no 'I’m sorry that this happened to you' – nothing in that direction. Without a word, the hotel door was opened while I stood next to it. Inside, she then gave me one of those chip keys for room 203. I asked where that room was located. She said, 'Yes, you need to go to the second floor, it’s up there.'
All right. After she left the foyer to go back to her apartment across the street, I walked up the stairs until I stood in front of room 203. I held the chip key to the lock – red blinking with beeping – the door did not open.
I tried again and again and again. I looked around, checking for the fifth time that I was standing in front of the correct room, as the chip key had the number 203 on it. But no matter how many times I tried, the room would not open.
So I came back down again. Coincidentally, someone was just delivering freshly baked bread and placed it in the foyer. I exchanged a few words with them and then rang the emergency bell again. I was already quite embarrassed to bother the owner once more, but I just couldn’t get into the room. And I would certainly not return to the bedbug-infested apartment.
There was no reaction to my repeated ringing of the bell. I waited an extra 2 minutes and rang the bell again. No reaction.
So I decided that I would probably spend the rest of the night in the back seat of my car, which I then did. And I must also say that I already have enough pain due to scoliosis and a herniated disc.
When my colleagues and I had finally had breakfast a few hours later, I went with my friend to the reception and we explained the situation that I could not get into the room with this chip key last night.
The staff member there immediately called the owner. I told her that I could not get into the room and therefore had spent the night in my car.
Her reaction to that? - 'Yes, I forgot to synchronize it with the lock....' - I was almost speechless. THAT was her reaction??? No apology that I had to sleep in the car for the night, nothing of the sort!!!
I even told her that I had rung the bell 2 more times after she had given me the key and had gone back. Her reaction? - 'I didn't hear that....' My jaw almost dropped.
So... after a staff member then performed the synchronization in the background, I was handed the key. My friend, in white foresight, came up with me right away to room 203. I held the chip to the lock there, and what happens? - It blinks red and beeps!!!! No access to the room!!!! I thought this could only be a nightmare.
So we both went back down, again to the reception, and said that we still could not get into the room!!!
The employee received the chip, checked everything, and then said that it was only registered from 11 o'clock (at that moment it was around 10:30). She then said that it should work now after she had typed something into the computer.
So we went back upstairs, and this time the room opened!!! Ladies and gentlemen. Actually, I wanted to do things with my friends in the coming hours, but I was so exhausted and felt like a wreck, thanks to that night, that I first fell into bed for a few hours.
The story is far from over; it continues!
After waking up around 2:30 PM, I realized that I had a large, severely swollen bite, undoubtedly from the bedbugs. I then squeezed it until it bled and oozed (I know, not pleasant to read, but THAT was my experience here).
I then informed myself online about these creatures and realized that the only way to absolutely prevent bringing the bugs home with me would be to destroy all the clothes I had with me. So not only the clothes I was wearing, but also the entire contents of my suitcase, including the suitcase itself!
It was a radical step, but the alternative approach of putting shoes and clothes in the freezer for a few days and 'hoping' that the bugs that had settled in the crevices and folds would all be eliminated was not an option for me.
Once you have caught bedbugs, you must hire a professional exterminator, and even then, as can be read online, the process is extremely labor-intensive and still offers no guarantee of success. I don't even want to know how much that costs.
So I had already devised a complete strategy on how to manage not to take any of these pests with me, or rather, to avoid bringing them into my apartment at home.
I left all the clothes from my suitcase back at the hotel, as I had to consider them potentially contaminated. There were a nice pair of jeans, a shirt, 2 t-shirts, 2 hoodies, socks and underwear, an extra large towel, and a pair of swim trunks.
Actually, we were supposed to stay until Sunday, but I was so mentally exhausted from the whole situation that I really didn't want to anymore. I took my suitcase, which now only contained my toiletry bag with a couple of other small items, and started my journey home.
Once Thomahof and never again! Bedbug infestation and treatment of the guest is an absolute outrage!!!

Here, harmony and good taste prevail.

This was our third stay at this hotel. We always return very satisfied. The quality of the welcome, the kindness, and the good humor of the staff are always present. This time we occupied room 116. This room, of good size, at the corner of the building, has two windows with two balconies. One of the windows has a beautiful view of the forest with several birches in the foreground, showcasing their bright foliage. The other window overlooks the meadow. The room was equipped with three radiators that the guest can operate at will, even in May. The room features a large and beautiful bathroom. The two sinks are embedded in a very large marble countertop, sufficient to hold all desired cosmetic products. It is unfortunate, however, that the Italian shower, which is otherwise of good dimensions, does not have a grab bar and a small ledge to place personal shower products, but this is a minor detail. I regretted more the absence of shutters or sufficiently blackout blinds, so that we were awakened very early each morning. On the other hand, we appreciated the excellent soundproofing of the rooms. In the afternoon, the hotel offers a wide selection of excellent homemade cakes. The evening meal consists of 5 courses with a choice of meat, fish, or vegetarian dish. The chef is very inspired by the appetizers, which demonstrate inventiveness and a remarkable palette of flavors. We fondly remember the small asparagus terrine and the small stuffed beef roulade. The fish is remarkably cooked, and the vegetables are enhanced by the chef's talent. The meats are tender, and the sauces or juices are excellent, even though my personal taste leans more towards cream sauces and encourages me to request a bit more creativity in the cooking of the meats. One evening, the meats and fish were presented in a buffet style, a format that seemed inappropriate for this category of dishes. Meals are served in several dining rooms, all comfortable and tastefully decorated. The tables are generally spaced sufficiently to preserve the intimacy of conversations. Our table (No. 42) checked all the boxes for a peaceful and comfortable meal. The servers are smiling and remain so even if you only drink mineral water, which is not the case in all hotels! One of the servers, whom we particularly appreciated, speaks excellent French. The hotel owner comes every evening to greet each guest with appropriate discretion. The pool, both indoor and outdoor, is large enough for a relaxing swim. This harmonious setting reflects on the clientele, who are relaxed and discreet. We only have one idea: to return very soon!

Passed the zenith

Our stay was marked by ups and downs. Especially the deficiencies in the gastronomy regarding the quality of the food and the lack of basics among the staff we could not understand and classify.
-Why weren't we offered an alternative to the oh-so-thin filter coffee at breakfast? We started from the 2. Day completely renounced.
-Why are whole bottles only cooled when ordering white or rosé wine and open quantities e.g. half liters not?
-Why is the kitchen able to prepare very good dishes for both starters and main courses, as well as hardly edible ones?
Why were we never asked if we liked it at Thomahof?
