Owner goes above and beyond
My girlfriend and I had a great and comfortable time at El Auqui. The best part about our stay was the personal attention and help from the owner, Lucho. He not only helped us with recommendations for the area, but also calling for taxis and making sure they were on time, offering laundry service so we didn't even have to leave the hostel, and being very attentive at breakfast to make sure we had everything that we needed. The water was hot most of the time and our room stayed warm due to the heater they let us borrow (would've been very cold otherwise). I agree with the previous reviewer who said the worst part of the experience was having to walk down Recoleta St. to get to the main city center... it was far too narrow and was stressful to nearly get run over multiple times a day as cars drove down. Overall a wonderful experience though, I recommend it!

Perfect!
Room was clean, bathroom too, with hot water (like really hot). The room was a cold but I was provided with a heater and that was just perfect. Laundry service very cheap and fast. Breakfast in the 3* hotel nearby (buffet). Staff super friendly and helping. Good location.

Nice, small hotel
I came across this little hotel just walking around, and I ended up staying there for a week. As with any place, there are some good things and some not-so-good things. The good: they gave me a good off season price of fourty soles per night in May of 2015. If I understand the pricing correctly, the same small room would be thirty dollars during high season, which starts in June. My room had a small flat screen TV, telephone, wifi and very importantly a heater which you don't always find in budget hotel rooms in Cusco. There was also plenty of hot water to take a shower. I found the bed to be comfortable.
They don't serve breakfast inside the hotel, but about a block away that have an affiliated hotel where you can get the breakfast buffet for only 5 soles. It's worth it because it's all you can eat and the food was good.
The only real negatives about the hotel are the location, which although not far from the main plaza, you have to walk down this very narrow street with one narrow lane for cars and one narrow sidewalk for pedestrians. There's really not enough room for the pedestrians to pass each other so sometimes it's difficult getting down that street. The other issue is with noise. Usually noise comes from outside the hotel in Peru but here the doors are thin and if you are on the second floor you can hear everything going on in the lobby including hearing the front doorbell and the telephone ringing. If you stay here I would recommend a room on the 3rd or 4th floor as there would probably be less noise there. At any rate it's a good idea to bring earplugs.
I'm not sure if I would stay here again. I would probably try to find a place closer to the main square as I ended up there every day I was in Cusco. However keep in mind the budget price he gave me and you have to take the price into account when looking for hotel rooms here.
Also note that there is a 9 o'clock check out time which I've never seen before anywhere in Peru. Fortunately I was there in May which they consider low season so they let me stay in the room until noon because my flight didn't leave until 3 p.m.

Nice stay in Cusco
Nice cozy hotel for good price with great breakfast in the nearby 3* hotel. The host was very polite and spoke english. The location is in the quiet street and it's around 10 minutes by walk to the centre. They provie also laundry and free coca tea.
