A great spot to unwind, chill, meet people and relax

We had never stayed at Solscape before, so we thought we’d give it a try and we’re so glad we did.
Just a few minutes’ drive from Raglan, Solscape is perched on a hill with absolutely stunning ocean views. We stayed in one of the clay/earth huts, which was such a cool and unique experience. It was rustic but very comfortable, especially the bed. There are also retired train carriages scattered around the property, offering simple yet fun and character filled accommodation options.
The grounds are beautiful, with plenty of native trees and well maintained pathways to wander through. The shared facilities are spacious and cleaned daily, with plenty of cooking pots, plates, and utensils available.
One of the highlights is the huge deck overlooking the ocean, with a lovely grassed area out front. There was a brazier lit while we were there, making it a great place to relax, chat, and connect with other guests.
The café serves excellent coffee and matcha, along with delicious homemade food. During our three night stay, the pizza oven was fired up twice such a treat! Great pizza, an amazing atmosphere under the stars, and a super chill vibe with a DJ playing laid-back music both nights.
Solscape isn’t five-star luxury, it’s rustic but that’s exactly its charm. The vibe is fantastic, the staff are friendly and helpful, the accommodation is simple yet comfortable and fun, and the views are the best in Raglan. The evening atmosphere was as good as anywhere in the world.
We absolutely loved our stay and will definitely be back soon.
Thanks so much to the team for a fun, relaxing, and memorable experience.
Grace & Brett.
PS we did not use it but there is a lovely sauna with sea views and beautiful spa pools and yoga.

A cross between camping and youth hostel

Solscape’s website (and prices) belie how very basic the place is. There’s an amazing coastal view from the reception area, and lushly landscaped grounds. But the musty rooms have seen way better days, as had my concave mattress. The website doesn’t mention that you need to supply your own towels and soap, or that there’s an extra charge for having a third person in a three-person hut. The shared kitchen, toilet and showers with variable levels of cleanliness, chairs with their stuffing coming out, and the shortage of mugs all added to the youth hostel vibe.

Not what it was.

Solscape 10 years back was a great experience we stayed in an earth dome. This visit Dec 25 was a poor shadow of what we had experienced back then. We now own a small camper van, so made a booking for the Sunday, and on arrival parked with all of the cars in what is a carpark. The site was powered although we did not need power, but that happens. Essentially for $96 we parked alongside all of the other people staying at solscape, no benefits, no trees no seclusion no tables. The only redeeming feature is a railway sleeper dividing 3 very small camper van parks. The toilet nearby didn't work the general cleanliness is relatively low the permaculture gardens are lack lustre, although looking ok. We liked the shabby chic back then, but certainly believe charging more than any other camper van park for much much less, is far from ok.

Run down faculties campsite is the parking lot

I was disappointed in this spot as a campsite for a camper van. The cost was far to high as the campsite was just their parking lot. The facilities were run down. I paid for two nights and then asked for my money back for the second night because our camper was leaking and there were heavy rains. The person working at the counter said she couldn’t refund me. When I asked why not and if I could speak with the owner she just said “she’s around. Do you know what she looks like”. But she didn’t get her for me.
Facilities were run down. For our family to use the sauna it would cost an extra 100 for an hour use.
There is lots of free camping in raglan and I would recommend that instead for self contained campers.
The kids enjoyed the trampoline and the view is beautiful.

Solscape. Its current state.

I love Solscape. It is a very special place to stay and I have come here over the last 12 years first with my family when the children were younger, and more recently on my own. It has always been a retreat from the humdrum of city life and a place of peace and quiet.
But over the last few years I have seen lack of upkeep. Projects are abandoned and the greenhouse now in disuse. The Tepee village has been all but abandoned, with just one last tepee standing, and looking neglected. The main cooking area has a real lack of cutlery, pots and pans and drying cloths. There are no plugs for the sinks, so to wash up the plug holes need to be sealed with garden leaves. The caboose cabins are rusting badly and some may be beyond repair. Half completed projects are left with grass growing around the resultant building debris.
I was still coming here though as I felt I could turn a blind eye to all of this, as there was still value in staying. But on my last trip the teenage son of the owner was racing around the main accomodation area on a motorised scooter and did not heed my requests to stop. Families were staying at that time with toddlers walking around. This young man and his friends were later running amok in the cafe area. That was the last straw for me. I asked for a refund, which was granted without question and I found alternative accomodation. I will not be returning to Solscape again in its current state. Very sad for me. And also for a once beautiful vision.
