Wonderful remote lodge in the biosphere reserve

We went to Sol Caribe for three nights after attending a wedding near Playa del Carmen. We went in and out by van and boat, and had a tour each day we were there. We stayed in the big room/cabin (separate building) right on the beach. It was fantastic. Highlights....the full day Ascencion Bay tour was unforgettable. We went out to the best snorkeling we've seen in years, plus dolphins, turtles (saw when snorkeling and after), fished for our lunch and our guide made ceviche. The previous half day tour was also fantastic with snorkeling, birds, dolphins, and was only overshadowed by the full day after--but both are worth doing. The lodge staff was very friendly and helpful, Lupita often checking in on us. Food was excellent, relatively simply in a good way, super fresh. Oh and the second morning we went out our door to the beach and ran into overnight tracks of a turtle laying eggs right there (they had other turtle nests protected with flagging tape).
The only (minor) issues--it was warm early in the night in our room even with the ocean breeze. Cooled off during the night. Not a big deal but be ready for it. Plus this is July so may be the hottest part of the year. Also if you're used to how you get picked up by the resorts the directions to meet the van on a seemingly random corner in Tulum may seem weird. But if you're used to Latin America travel it will seem perfectly normal, and it worked out well.
Bottom line--we loved it and highly recommend Sol Caribe.
ps the pictures here on Trip Advisor are accurate. It's a gorgeous location.

Big disappointment

Super disappointed with these 2 nights on the Caribbean floor. Hotel very aging, the i frastructures are in a very bad condition, the staff absolutely non-existent except the cooks who fortunately are there to raise the standard. If a group pr ube yoga retreat arrives expect to become totally transparent or even be treated differently, but rest assured when the time to pay arrives this will change.... In short it is absolutely not worth the price they charge you, nor the 3 hours of trail and details that matters all the coast is littered with plastics and trash,

Unexpectedly unacceptable to me, personally

I stay in the Tulum area at least once every year. I've been coming since 2005 and decided to venture farther south this time. I had booked five nights at Sol Caribe but left after two and went back to the hotel that I had come from just inside Sian Ka'an near Tulum. The restaurant and the service were reason enough to leave Sol Caribe, but the final deciding factor was the sea. The beach was beautiful, but the water on the second morning was absolutely full of brown particles that adhered to my body and filled my swimsuit. Since I go to the Tulum area mainly for the beach and the water, that was a major problem. Apparently, after a very heavy season of sargassum, the waves stirred up the remnants of the seaweed and made the water ugly and disgusting to swim in. The beach was walkable and beautiful beyond the resort in both directions, which was great, but there were two mean dogs from a nearby property that kept after me, barking and baring their teeth. (The first time they approached, I thought I was a goner.) There was only one other room occupied when I was there. The restaurant was unacceptable to me although I only had one dinner and one breakfast. There was little selection and no menu. It was easy to tell that the food was of low quality, which was confirmed when I saw the cook applying Hershey's chocolate syrup and whipped cream from a can to the dessert. The cooks were not chefs by any means, and it was impossible to communicate with them even though I am moderately conversational in Spanish, with little problem talking with the receptionist. (She doesn't know much English.) I didn't want to fetch the receptionist every time I was going to want to order in the kitchen. There was virtually no drink selection, just one cheap beer in a can and margarita and pina colada, and those seemed poor quality, like from a mix. I thought maybe eating in Punta Allen would be an option, but the road to get there and the roads in town were no fun but rather depressing as was the town itself, and the restaurant experience that I had also happened to be disastrous. Finally, the trip from Tulum and back was torture, even though I had a small jeep. But the room and the grounds and the beach at Sol Caribe were beautiful. Oh, but when I arrived, I was greeted in the room by the chemical smell of four liquid air fresheners, which I promptly put outside.

Paradise place, but what an effort

2 unnerving hours on the road littered with very deep potholes and fords with high water. If you don't have an SUV, don't take the road.
The location is certainly fantastic and isolated, but the service is not up to the cost.
The included breakfast includes, in addition to some drinks, only 2 small pieces of bread and jam per person.
The prices of meals are really high, justified only by the difficulty in bringing supplies to the hotel.
There is no hot water. There is no hairdryer and if you try to use yours the power goes out. Obviously no air conditioning.

Not clear instructions on entering the park on the listing. You have to read the very bottom of the confirmation page

Booked a room. Got to the national park gate. They wouldn't let us through. No one would pick up the phone at the hotel. Got back a few hours later. Refunded our cost but ended up wasting a whole vacation day and having to book a cheap hotel last minute
