Grab the folder from the non-official-looking fella -follow his suggestions. Some engravings are a trip to Puritan grim reaper heaven. Get it?

The Old Granary Burying Ground is one of the oldest cemeteries in Boston, though few who pass it daily on their commutes to work via Park Street Station probably realize its historic significance. Located behind the Park Street Church, the graveyard is home to crumbling 18th century stones. Under some of them, lie the key figures of the Revolutionary War, including Sam Adams, Paul Revere, John Hancock, and Crispus Atticus and the other victims of the Boston Massacre that took place down the street and around the corner. Sometimes, if you're not already on their tour, you'll see guides dressed in colonial garb leading swaths of tourists through.

If you are already walking the Freedom Trail, this should be a mandatory stop. Many famous historical figures are buried here, and equally interesting, the headstones of the time had some really wonderful art.

The freedom trail is filled with interesting historical places. This is one of those. So what if its a graveyard. It’s still a park and it provides a bunch of interesting history lessons to all who swing through here...

Some famous historical figures are buried along the freedom trail; and per the signs Paul Revere rests here. You dont get much bigger in Americana than him. However Revere is not the only one here of that would be considered important. Benjamin Franklin’s parents are also entombed here and Ben is one of the few bigger figures than Revere.

Pro Tip: This is the first cemetery on the Freedom Trail from the beginning.

This particular cemetery is very tranquil and is tucked in between 5+ story buildings on 3 sides and a major street on the fourth. It is adorned with some interesting headstones and some giant trees that are all rather old, potentially a few hundred years. I still don’t know if I would want to be in any of the tenements that surround this place. But its age is easily seen as half the headstones are overgrown with moss or lichen. It is very picturesque to boot.

So yeah it’s a suggested place to stop off and take a gander at history. If nothing else it’s a great rest stop and will let you come to a peaceful calm very quickly.

This part of the Freedom trail the main entrance is non-accessible. You will need to call the mayor office to have the side gate unlock, so you can enter through accessible entrance of the graveyard. There are several singers of declaration of independence including President John Hancock are buried here.

I'm a complete Revolutionary War nerd. Always have been. So when I first saw the Granary Burying Ground, peeking in between the gates to see the grave of James Otis, I sort of had a fanboy moment.

This is American history. This is where the stories you've read in textbooks come to life. As with the other attractions along Boston's Freedom Trail, the Granary Burying Ground is a must-visit spot.

What's better than visiting a graveyard in the history packed city of Boston? I can't think of anything more exciting. Visit here during October and you're sure to run into the ghost of Paul Revere and his friends.

Visiting historical graveyards is not creepy. In fact, for ones as storied as Boston's, it is actually a must for any history-oriented tour of the city.

I personally enjoy just wandering around old cemetaries and looking at the monuments. This centuries old one is on the Freedom Trail and contains some neat tombstones and historical figures.
